Howard Kobata - Good Stuff
So I've heard a ton about Howard Kobata. I've been to his website and watched the short video clips too. But, this weekend, I finally got to meet him in person and see him do a clinic. He covered some good stuff!
It was interesting to me because a lot of what he talked about makes sense. There's quite a bit that I do, but never saw taught. It's another eye opener about how I, as a coach, overlook some things that need to be taught. Since they were not taught to it doesn't dawn on me that some players need to have such things explained.
Anyway, I loved the concepts he presented to the kids. I could see that there was a TON covered in a short period of time. I can also see why players would sign up for lessons vs just go to a clinic with him. I don't think even I was able to soak up everything that was covered in just that one session. I liked being at the clinic because it gave me a better idea of how to TEACH better skills to the players I work with, and, of course, to my own daughter. I only wish I was able to jump in with the girls.
At any rate, Howard, if you're ever back in town for a clinic or, if and when you start giving lessons in Hawaii, I'll be there.

Howard is concidered one of the top fielding coaches in the country. I have been lucky to have attended a coaching clinic he did for our league and all of the coaches were blown away by the drills he showed us.
Howard is from Hawaii so Stacy you you may convince him to give lessons in Hawaii.
You might want to rethink that, Has he ever taught at Mike Candrea's softball camps? The answer is yes, once and he was never asked back. I think his current 2008/2009 teaching does more harm than good.

Also agree that his style does more harm than good. Mike Candrea is much better,( 7 national titles and Olympic Gold) and doesn't humiliate young girls. Howard Kubota is an unpleasant man, with major issues. My daughter will never get anywhere near his clinic again.
Howard Kobata doesn't teach, he yells at girls for the entire clinic. Even when they do it right he has something negative to say. He is a small little half man that gets his kicks off being mean to young women. Sick!
I had my daughter attend his lessons & clinics for several years and not only do I know but more importantly MY Daughter knows he was the best defensive instructor that she ever had and is a major reason why she is on a scholarship at college now. He might yell out there but it is to push the girls to be the best that they can be. Over the years he has toned down his yelling considerably and has shed that stigma about himself. So much so that my 10 year old niece started seeing him last year & at first hated him but after a couple of lessons thinks he is one of the best now.
He may very well be the best fielding instructor many have had. Try someone else and you will see there are others who are better. And others who are better and cheaper. And don't find it necessary to yell.
